TRAVEL PLANNING

Embarkation: Monday 12.08.24 at 2 pm in Oban

Disembarkation: Wednesday 21.08.24 at 10 am in Oban

DAY 1 – OBAN

Your expedition begins in Oban. Steady is waiting for you in the marina on the North Pier, just 300m from the train station. While enjoining coffee/tea with cake, we get to know each other and the ship. We will leave Oban that same afternoon and sail to a beautiful anchorage in the Sound of Mull where we will also spend the night. After dinner together you will be further briefed on the upcoming voyage.

DAY 2 – SAILING TO RUM

We leav the anchorage and sail to the island of Rum. Rum is a national nature reserve and the largest island of the Small Isles. The island’s most famous residents are the golden eagles (reintroduced in the 1980s), red deer and the hardy Rum ponies.

We anchor here in the natural bay overlooking the architectural Kinloch Castle.

There are two bothies on Rum maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association, at Guirdhil and Dibidil. These bothies are in fantastic locations in the Rum National Nature Reserve. A bothy is a simple mountain hut in remote mountain areas and fairly common in Scotland.

DAY 3 +4 GUIRDIL BOTHY AND BLOODSTONE HILL

Duration: 6 to 8 hours Distance: 21 km Overnight: Guirdil Bothy

Climbs: Minishal 345m – Fionchra 462m – Bloodstone Hill 385m

Two days mountain hike in which we walk to the West side of Rum. It is a hike through the valleys of Kinloch and Shellesder. We stay overnight in Guirdil. The next day we walk from Bloodstone Hill and Salisbury’s Dam back to Kinloch where we spend the night aboard Steady.

Area: A good path: rocky and boggy in places.

DAY 5 + 6 THE RUM CUILLIN & DIBIDEL BOTHY LOOP

Duration: 12 to 14 hours Distance: 21.5 km Overnight: Dibidel

Climbs: Corbett Askival 812m – Corbett Ainshval 781m – Fiona Trallval 702m

This tough mountain walk with climbing covers the 5 main peaks on Rum, including 2 Corbetts and one Fiona. The Rum Cuillin is perhaps one of the most impressive in the Scottish Isles. The climbing is easy with good holds and solid rock, but the route is long and strenuous! On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the Hebrides.

Aera: Rocky mountaineering. Climbing is not too difficult if the right path is found. The way back is boggy.

At the end of the 2-day mountain hike, we return to the ship.

DAY 7 – EIGG AND CLIMBING AN SGURR

Eigg is the second largest and most populous island of the beautiful Small Isles. Eigg is dominated by a remarkable vertical blockstone of An Sgurr. The impressive peak was originally a lava flow from the volcano on Rum some 58 million years ago. The lava followed an ancient riverbed and filled the valley. Over the following millions of years, the pitchstone lava, which is harder than the surrounding basalt, withstood erosion and remained standing while the surrounding rock was gradually worn away. Now the kilometre-long ridge stands proudly, with the summit at 393 metres.

The climb to the top offers truly fantastic views of the other Small Isles and of Skye and Ardnamurchan. The route is fairly easy, but the last part is a steep climb and we have to rock climb (very easily) along the ridge.

DAY 8 – MULL

We are on our way back and we head to Tobermorry on the Isle of Mull. This cosy and colourful harbour town with many pubs and shops is the tourist attraction of the Hebrides. Dinner this evening is ashore so you can taste the Scottish cuisine!

DAY 9 – KERRERA

After a leisure morning in Tobermory we sail to green paradise Kerrera, followed by a pleasent walk on the island. Compared to all the hustle and bustle of the nearby tourist centre of Oban, Kerrera is very quiet, rural and offers stunning views of the surrounding coastal areas. Cars are banned on the island except for locals making it a walker’s paradise. In the evening, we enjoy the Captains dinner together.

DAY 10 – OBAN

After breakfast, we raise anchor and sail back to Oban in an hour. After an active 10 days enjoying the beautiful Hebrides, we say goodbye to each other at 10 am.

NB: The above schedule depends on weather, wind and tide, if necessary we deviate from it.
