The Caledonian Canal: A Historic Journey

Opened in 1822, the Caledonian Canal is a true Scottish gem, linking the east coast with the west via a series of lochs, including the world-famous Loch Ness. Built to offer a safer alternative to Scotland’s rugged northern waters, the canal is steeped in history and brimming with natural beauty. With its charming locks and breathtaking views, this waterway is as much a journey through time as it is a passage through some of Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Your Adventure Begins in Oban
Your voyage kicks off in Oban at 5:00 PM! Steady will be waiting for you at the marina by the North Pier, just 300 meters from the train station. You’ll meet your fellow travelers and have plenty of time to get acquainted with the ship. After a shared dinner, we’ll give you a detailed briefing about the voyage ahead and the adventures that await. We’ll raise a glass together to celebrate the start of an incredible week filled with nature and discovery!

Days 2 & 3: Hoist the Sails!
It’s time to set sail! Leaving Oban behind, we’ll chart our course toward the enchanting Loch Linnhe. Over the next two days, we’ll sail through this breathtaking loch, surrounded by rolling green hills and picturesque bays. We’ll anchor in peaceful, sheltered coves where you can fully immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature. There’s plenty of time to explore the ship further and enjoy scenic walks in the surrounding landscapes.

Day 4: Into the Caledonian Canal
Today, we head towards the legendary Caledonian Canal, with the majestic peak of Ben Nevis rising in the distance. By the end of the day, we’ll arrive at the impressive Neptune’s Staircase, a series of locks that will lift us an astonishing 19 meters. It’s a spectacular sight—one of Scotland’s great engineering marvels!

Day 5: A Spectacular Day of Sailing
A long but awe-inspiring day awaits, filled with locks and stunning views. This is the most beautiful part of the route! We’ll spend the day sailing through the heart of the Highlands, surrounded by dramatic scenery, and finish in the charming village of Gairlochy. Here, we’ll spend the night and have time to explore the peaceful surroundings.

Day 6: Across the Legendary Loch Ness
Today, we sail across the iconic Loch Ness, famed worldwide for its mysteries and legends. We’ll glide along its quiet shores and arrive in the welcoming village of Fort Augustus, where you can soak up the charm of local pubs and the village’s cozy atmosphere. And of course, we’ll keep an eye out—who knows, maybe we’ll catch a glimpse of the elusive Loch Ness Monster!

Day 7: Final Sailing Day to Inverness
Our final day on the Caledonian Canal takes us to Muirtown Marina, just outside the historic city of Inverness. Inverness offers a vibrant mix of quaint streets, impressive castles, and rich cultural heritage. In the evening, we’ll gather for a festive captain’s dinner to celebrate our journey. For those with energy to spare, a visit to Hootananny—Inverness’s most lively pub—is the perfect way to end the trip!
