Oban to Ullapool: Possible Route

Oban – The Start of Your Adventure
Your sailing journey begins in Oban, where Steady will be waiting for you at the marina by the North Pier, just 300 metres from the train station. At 5:00 PM, we, Jan-Willem and Mariëlle, will warmly welcome you aboard. Take your time to explore the ship, meet your fellow adventurers, and settle in. After introductions, we’ll enjoy a delicious meal together and provide an overview of the exciting journey ahead.

The Small Isles
After a vibrant first stop in the colourful harbour of Tobermory, we’ll set sail for the enchanting Small Isles: Eigg, Muck, Rum, and Canna. Nestled in the Inner Hebrides, these islands lie south of Skye and west of Ardnamurchan Point, Scotland’s westernmost mainland peninsula.

Each island boasts its own unique character and geological story. Eigg, dominated by the striking Sgurr of Eigg, is known for its volcanic origins and its basalt ridge that offers spectacular views. Muck, the smallest of the group, features fertile lowlands and idyllic sandy beaches. Rum, the largest island, showcases dramatic peaks like Askival, part of an ancient volcanic caldera. Lastly, Canna enchants visitors with its lush green pastures and towering cliffs, shaped by centuries of volcanic activity and erosion.

Known for their pristine landscapes, breathtaking vistas, and abundant wildlife, the Small Isles are a haven for nature lovers. Our exact route will depend on the weather, adding a sense of adventure and spontaneity to the experience.

Heading for the Outer Hebrides and the Shiants
From the Small Isles, we’ll chart a course toward the Outer Hebrides, a spectacular chain of islands stretching along Scotland’s wild west coast. As we sail northward, we’ll encounter the captivating beauty of Barra, Vatersay, Eriskay, and South Uist before making our way to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

The Outer Hebrides are celebrated for their rugged landscapes, remote allure, and deep historical roots. A standout highlight is the Shiant Isles, an uninhabited haven famous for its dramatic cliffs teeming with seabirds, including puffins. The Shiants are a nature lover’s paradise, offering a glimpse of unspoiled wilderness in all its glory.

If time and weather permit, we’ll visit the legendary Standing Stones of Callanish, an awe-inspiring site steeped in ancient ritual. We’ll also explore the Black Houses—traditional turf-roofed dwellings that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Hebrides.

From the Outer Hebrides to Ullapool
After our exploration of the Outer Hebrides, we’ll embark on a thrilling final leg toward Ullapool. This action-packed day at sea offers opportunities to spot marine life, from playful dolphins and curious seals to majestic orcas.

As we sail past the Summer Isles—a cluster of serene, biodiverse islands—you’ll be treated to stunning views of lush green hills, rugged cliffs, and tranquil coves.

Finally, we’ll arrive in Ullapool, nestled in the serene waters of Loch Broom. As we savour our last moments on the water, it’ll be time to bid farewell, taking with you memories of extraordinary landscapes, shared adventures, and unforgettable experiences.

Nature Sets the Course: “Nature and the weather shape every voyage, making each sailing adventure truly one of a kind. The proposed itinerary serves as a guideline and may be adjusted to match the conditions, ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and unforgettable experience. Your safety and happiness always come first.”

Wildlife

Sailing with Steady promises amazing wildlife encounters. You’ll often see seabirds like puffins, razorbills and guillemots, while sea eagles soar majestically along the rugged coastline. On land, keep an eye out for red deer, and with a bit of luck, you might spot an otter in the bay. The seabird colonies, especially during the breeding season, create a cacophony of sounds that echo off the cliffs. As we sail through Scottish waters, you may also spot seals curiously poking their heads above the water or sunbathing on rocks.

Dolphins are frequent visitors, with common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and white-beaked dolphins often playing alongside the boat. Occasionally, we spot Risso’s or white-sided dolphins, and Minke whales are common. On rare days, you might even see humpback whales. The real stars of the show, however, are the local pod of orcas — an unforgettable experience if you’re lucky enough to see them. Make sure to keep your binoculars handy!
